Peter Aronsson

Professor in Cultural Heritage and the Uses of History, Linköping University

Biography

B. 1959. Professor of History at Linnaeus University (former Växjö University) since 1999. Professor of Cultural Heritage and the Uses of History at Culture Studies department, Linköping University 2001-2012. PhD in history from Lunds University 1992. His recent work is on the role of historical narrative and consciousness in directing action, in regard both to historiography and the uses of the past in historical culture at large. Recently he has co-ordinated two international projects exploring the uses of the past (www.eunamus.eu and www.nordicspaces.eu).

Ongoing research

The projects on museums and use of history, which has been separately funded, has established a new comparative approach to assessing the role of museums in the making of nations and states. With the funding from the Program he has contributed to a book length study on the Concept of History.

The study problematizes the established understanding of “history”. It questions the standard conception of “the past” as simply an existing reality open to historical investigation. History obtains its meaning from the point of view of the contemporary situation, its fears and expectations, in ways articulated already by Augustine, but suppressed by academic disciplines. The ancient concept of history remains an arena of productive epistemological dilemmas, and places the profession of academic history within a larger context of cultural heritage, memory and myth.

On-going research brings the results from the large scale comparative museum research into a conceptual framework where Cultural constitution is made into an instrument for exploring the power of cultural representation.
