Lecture by Carlo Ginzburg: "Inner Dialogues. The Jew as Devil's Advocate"

Published on 17 October, 2013

Open lecture at Södertörn University, 6 November, 2–4 pm.

The lecture will be held in room MB503.

Description:

The lecture will explore the cognitive potential of Mikhail Bakhtin’s reinterpretation of the dialogic approach put forward by Martin Buber, focusing on a case study: a series of early 18th century English texts in which fictional Jews raise objections to the Gospels’s narratives dealing with Jesus’s resurrection and miracles. How could this sophisticated dialogic device be deciphered? Which were its implications? The lecture will try to answer these questions by focusing on a specific context: weekly journals based on questions and answers and their impact on public opinion in 18th century England.
