Achille Mbembe: "Technologies of Happiness in the Age of Animism"

Published on 12 August, 2015

Lecture at BioRio, Stockholm, Tuesday 8 September, 6 pm.

The lecture will be followed by a conversation between Achille Mbembe and TMR-scholar Stefan Helgesson.

About the lecture:

"Not so long ago, it was understood that human happiness could be achieved if only we could understand, predict and ultimately control the events and workings of nature and of ourselves. We now live in an age - that of animated things and inanimate persons - when the idea of happiness has been thoroughly depoliticized.

It is more than ever before intertwined with that of health and the harsh facts of decline, decay and death. Happiness is more and more seen as produced at the intersection of biotechnologies, biomedicine and bioeconomy - a constant work of modulation of the self in relation to desired forms of life.

The lecture will explore the political dilemmas resulting from this shift and will track their significance at a time when capitalism has ultimately taken the features of a primitive religion." - Achille Mbembe

Achille Mbembe is professor at Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research, University of the Witwatersrand.

Stefan Helgesson is professor of English at Stockholm University and member of the TMR program committee.

The lecture is organized by the publisher TankeKraft in cooperation with Time, Memory and Representation.
